The School of Maritime Operations (SMOPS) has completed a one-week simulation training programme for Officers of Short Service Commission and Special Duties (SSC/SD) Intake 62 on Friday, 5 June 2026, at the Lill-May Didriksen Simulation Centre, Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC), Nutekpor.
The training formed part of the Officers’ Basic Naval Training and was aimed at equipping them with the requisite knowledge and practical skills in navigation, ship handling, and bridge management through the use of modern simulation technology.
During the training, participants were taken through various modules including Introduction to NPRO 6000, Basic Bridge Management, Ship Handling, Navigational Aids, Evolutions, Emergency Steering and Engine Failure Awareness, as well as Light and Sound Signals. The practical sessions enabled the officers to gain hands-on experience in handling different navigational scenarios within a controlled training environment.
In his remarks, the Guest of Honour and Commanding Officer of SMOPS, Naval Captain (Capt GN) Michael Cudjoe, commended the participants for their commitment and professionalism throughout the training. He explained that the simulation training provides participants with realistic exposure to life at sea and equips them with the basic skills required to manoeuvre a ship and respond to various navigational situations should the need arise. He therefore urged the officers to build on the knowledge acquired and continue to pursue excellence in their professional development.
