The Commandant of the National Defence College of Tanzania, Major General Wilbert Augustin Ibuge, has led a 22-member delegation to pay a visit to the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, at the Naval Headquarters on Monday, 20 April 2026.
The delegation, drawn from Course 14/2025/2026, was received on arrival by the Chief Staff Officer, Commodore Ben Baba Abdul, along with other senior officers. The engagement between the CNS and the Commandant was centred on strengthening institutional ties through student and senior directing staff exchanges, the sharing of expertise, and the reinforcement of the long-standing bilateral relations between Ghana and Tanzania.
As part of the programme, the Deputy Chief Staff Officer (Naval Policy and Plans), Captain (GN) Douglas Akotey, delivered a presentation on “The Role of the Ghana Navy in Managing Ghana’s Natural Resource Wealth and Potential Areas of Conflict with Local and Foreign Parties.” He explained that the Ghana Navy’s primary responsibility is to safeguard the nation’s territorial waters from external threats and support national prosperity.
He also emphasised the Navy’s collaboration with key institutions, including the Ghana Maritime Authority, the Marine Police, and other stakeholders, to enhance maritime security and protect the country’s natural resources.
Captain Akotey further noted that illegal fishing, piracy, illegal bunkering, unauthorised resource exploitation, and territorial disputes involving both local and foreign actors remain potential sources of conflict. He added that the Ghana Navy continues to address these challenges through intensified patrols, intelligence sharing, and joint operations, while ensuring the sustainable use of Ghana’s marine resources.
He added that these efforts help secure vital national assets, including fisheries and offshore oil and gas reserves, while contributing to the country’s economic growth. As a gesture of goodwill, souvenirs were exchanged between the two institutions, symbolising their shared commitment to deepening cooperation and partnership.
