Commodore Emmanuel Ayesu Kwafo has handed over the Wheel of Command of the Western Naval Command (WNC) to Commodore Samuel Ayelazono as the new Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) during a handing and taking over ceremony on Friday 9 May 2025.
The ceremony which took place at the Harry Seshie Drill Square, involved a parade of four divisions and a 48-man armed guard to signify the completion of smooth transfer of authority.
In his farewell address, Commodore Kwafo who doubled as the 2 Garrison Commander, placed emphasis on the need to foster unity, mutual respect and a shared purpose as a culture that would shape the Ghana Navy. He said that a strong conviction and the bold step to serve the nation as a naval officer some 38 years ago gave him the opportunity to travel the world.
Even though it came with challenges, he mentioned that he was able to surmount it through practical guiding principles. Commodore Kwafo, who has had a distinguished career in the Ghana Armed Forces for a period spanning more than three decades, added that the acquisition of knowledge, training and preparation were the anchors of survival in his military career hence his guiding principles. He also extended felicitations to the new FOC and expressed confidence in his ability to steer the affairs of WNC.
In his acceptance speech, the incoming Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Commodore Samuel Ayelazono promised to serve with an unwavering loyalty and selfless dedication to duty. He was optimistic that with his leadership, personnel would work hard in order to achieve the mandate of WNC.
He noted due to the endless sacrifices of Naval personnel, Ghana’s maritime domain had remained calm, adding that, they will collaborate with other maritime stakeholders to maintain a safe maritime environment. He said it would be achievable with priorities centred on operational readiness, discipline and respect for time-tested traditions.
Commodore Ayelazono thanked his predecessor, Commodore Kwafo, for his unmatched leadership and rich experience over the years. Prior to his appointment, Commodore Ayelazono was the Flag Officer Fleet of the Ghana Navy.
