The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Ms Emelia Arthur on Tuesday 19 February 2025 in Accra.

The visit, aimed at strengthening the existing ties between the Ghana Navy and the Ministry, saw the latter reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the Ghana Navy, particularly in the acquisition of boats to enhance maritime/fisheries operations.

The CNS and the Minister highlighted collaborative efforts in ensuring security and safety of Ghana’s oil fields and the need to sensitise fishermen on the risks and dangers of entering restricted zones in the Oil Fields.

Discussions between the two, also explored the introduction of aluminum canoes through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). The canoes when introduced, will be cost effective, environmentally friendly, and easier to maintain.

During their interaction, it was mentioned that two prototypes had already been tested and receiving positive feedback from fishermen and thus, awaiting government’s approval for mass production, with the Navy playing a key role in its implementation.

On his part, Vice Admiral Yakubu stressed on the Navy’s role in ensuring the safety of fishermen and fishing vessels at sea. He reiterated the Navy’s support to artisanal fishermen during the close season.
