A French delegation led by its Defence Attaché (DA) to Ghana, Colonel Gregoire Madelin paid a courtesy visit to the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command (WNC), Commodore (Cdre) Emmanuel Ayesu Kwafo and the Flag Officer Fleet (FOF), Cdre Samuel Ayelazono at Sekondi.

The visit aimed at strengthening bilateral military relations and enhancing maritime security cooperation between France and Ghana.

During the meeting with the FOC, Cdre Kwafo warmly welcomed the French delegation, emphasizing the long-standing partnership between the two Navies.

He highlighted the importance of continued collaboration in intelligence sharing, joint maritime patrols, and capacity-building initiatives to tackle security threats in the Gulf of Guinea.

The FOC WNC expressed gratitude for the French Language Centres established in strategic naval commands, saying they have played a crucial role in bridging communication gaps between Ghanaian troops and their Francophone counterparts during joint operations and peacekeeping missions.

He noted fluency in the French language had become essential for effective coordination with neighbouring countries, especially in addressing security threats within the Gulf of Guinea and broader Economic Community of West African States region.

Cdre Kwafo also mentioned that the initiative had benefitted the Ghana Armed Forces at large and contributed to improving intelligence-sharing capabilities and fostering stronger military ties between Ghana and Francophone nations.

In his remarks, the French DA expressed appreciation for Ghana Navy’s commitment to regional security and acknowledged the successes recorded through joint efforts, including multinational exercises.

He reiterated France’s willingness to support Ghana in addressing maritime challenges, including piracy, illegal fishing, and smuggling activities.

The DA later visited the FOF, Cdre Samuel Ayelazono who also commended the enduring relationship between both countries. Discussions centred on fleet readiness, enhanced naval training, and technology exchange to boost operational efficiency.

The visit underscored France’s commitment to deepening defence ties with Ghana while fostering improved maritime security in the West African region.

Both parties reaffirmed their dedication towards enhancing cooperation through sustained engagements and joint operations.

There was an exchange of souvenirs as a symbol of goodwill and continued partnership between the two countries.
