The Ghana Navy and the United States Naval Forces Europe and Africa (NAVEUR/NAVAF) have strengthened maritime security cooperation following renewed maritime engagements.
This was revealed during a visit paid by the Commander of United States NAVEUR/NAVAF, Admiral George Wikoff, to the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing at the Naval Headquarters on Wednesday, 22 April 2026. Admiral Wikoff was received with full military honours, including a quarter guard mounted in his honour.
Rear Admiral Bessing reaffirmed the long-standing partnership between the Ghana Navy and the United States, highlighting sustained support in training, infrastructure, and operations, while also acknowledging humanitarian assistance received during missions. He further referenced joint maritime exercises such as Exercise OBANGAME EXPRESS and COOPERATION AFLOAT READINESS AND TRAINING (CARAT), which enhance regional maritime security and coordination.
Additionally, the CNS outlined ongoing efforts to strengthen maritime domain awareness through training and hydrography capacity development, stressing these initiatives continue to improve operational readiness and deepen maritime security outcomes.
In response, Admiral Wikoff commended the Ghana Navy’s readiness and consistent commitment to maritime domain security. He welcomed the initiatives and noted that enhanced capability serves as a strong force multiplier in maritime operations. He further assured continued support from the United States NAVEUR/NAVAF to strengthen maritime domain awareness and deepen cooperation for sustained maritime security effectiveness.
