The Ghana Navy has officially launched its 65th anniversary celebrations on Monday 29 July 2024, at the Owusu Ansah Hall of the Naval Headquarters, marking six and a half decades of dedicated service to the nation.

Established in 1959, the Ghana Navy has played a crucial role in maintaining the country’s maritime security, protecting its territorial waters, and contributing to regional peacekeeping efforts.

The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu in his address, emphasized the Ghana Navy’s commitment to building on the its legacy of excellence. “The Ghana Navy has played a significant role in developing the maritime economy and has the potential, if given the necessary resources, to build a formidable maritime force. These achievements show our resolve, dedication and excellence that define our Navy.” He said.

The CNS stated that the Ghana Navy has served the people of Ghana and delivered on both traditional and evolving contemporary roles such as the areas of fisheries protection, protection of offshore oil and gas platforms, protection of shipping and the marine environment. He enumerated some of the milestones within the period, including the acquisition of 12 patrol boats of varying sizes with close to 20 small boats, a state-of-the-art machinery at the tailoring pool located at the Ghana Navy Supply Base, the refurbishment of the Naval Shipyard and other numerous infrastructural developments.

Rear Admiral Yakubu revealed that, the phase one of the naval base at Enzilibo will be commissioned by His Excellency the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo before the end of the year. He commended his predecessors and all personnel for their hard work and dedication.

The Chief Staff Officer at the Naval Headquarters, Commodore Bismark Kojo Atiayao in his welcome address said, the theme for the celebration; "Consolidating 65 years of Maritime Excellence Through Diversified Maritime Operations,” encapsulates the Ghana Navy’s journey. He added that the Ghana Navy has been defending country’s maritime interest, growing in strength and capability to meet evolving maritime challenges.

Commodore Atiayao entreated all personnel to take part in the series of activities lined up to mark the celebration.

The Ghana Navy also unveiled a logo for the anniversary celebrations.
