The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has announced plans to partner with the Ghana Navy to develop and promote a unique tourism experience dubbed “Trip to the Equator” initiative, which will allow tourists to visit the centre of the earth.

This was made known when a delegation from GTA led by the Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr Ben Anane-Nsiah paid a courtesy call on the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu on Thursday 16 May 2024, at the Naval Headquarters, Burma Camp.

The partnership aims to capitalize on the growing demand for experiential tourism and Ghana’s strategic location as the only country closest to the centre of the earth.

The Deputy CEO thanked the CNS for the warm reception and added that, the initiative offers a unique opportunity for Ghana to attract visitors seeking exceptional experiences. He expressed excitement about the partnership, stating that the ‘Trip to the Equator’ initiative has immense potential to boost Ghana’s tourism industry.

He advocated for the piloting of the initiative to test the feasibility, identify challenges and develop strategies to address them. He also called for collaboration among stakeholders including the Ghana Maritime Authority, to ensure the success of the initiative. He also called for the commencement of coastal tours, where tourists would be ferried along Ghana’s coast.

Rear Admiral Yakubu on his part, said the Ghana Navy is thrilled to partner with GTA to develop the innovative tourism initiative, which will not only boost Ghana’s tourism industry but also promote the country’s rich maritime environment.

He emphasized the Ghana Navy’s commitment to supporting the tourism industry, citing the importance of a secure maritime environment for the growth of tourism. He assured the GTA delegation that, the Ghana Navy would provide adequate security to ensure the safety of tourists. He added that, the Ghana Navy Band would be made available to entertain tourists onboard with live band music when the initiative commences.
