A two-day marriage seminar was held for personnel and spouses of Naval Headquarters and Riverine Command at the Owusu Ansah Hall.
The seminar, first of its kind at the Command level, organized by the Director Naval Religious Affairs, Commander David Benedict Quayson commenced on Wednesday 14 May 2025, with a look at addressing marital challenges personnel face and provide a platform for participants to learn from each other's experiences.
It also sought to provide resources and support to strengthen families within the Ghana Navy.
Facilitators were drawn from the Ghana Navy’s Religious and Legal Affairs Directorates, Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) and the 37 Military Hospital’s Wellness Centre. They focused on topics such as Challenges of Military Marriage and the Way Forward, Legal Issues with Marriages of Personnel and Psychological Issues with Marriages in the Military among others.
The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, who was the Guest Speaker during the official opening of the seminar, emphasized the need for counselling and training among personnel to help manage family and mental health challenges.
He stressed on the mental challenges faced by military personnel and their spouses due to deployment and prolonged separation leading to emotional distress such as loneliness, anxiety, and depression.
"It is therefore imperative that military personnel and their spouses access counselling and therapy services to address their marital challenges and mental health concerns," he noted.
