The President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), His Excellency (HE) Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Monday 23 December 2024 commissioned a Forward Operating Base (FOB) and a new naval ship at Ezinlibo in the Jomoro Municipality and the Sekondi Naval Base respectively.
The FOB is the biggest naval base in the Ghana Navy. The new ship, Ghana Navy Ship (GNS) Achimota, is the third ship to bear the name after two previously decommissioned vessels some years ago, and is the largest vessel so far acquired by the Ghana Navy, measuring 65 metres in length.
The President in his address at the commissioning of FOB Ezinlibo, highlighted his government’s commitment to enhancing the Ghana Navy’s logistical support and personnel accommodation, demonstrating his commitment to strengthening the Ghana Navy’s capabilities.
HE Nana Akufo-Addo stated that the establishment of the Naval Training Command at Nutekpor and the Riverine Command, alongside strategically located FOBs like Ezinlibo, Tilli, Bui, Sankore and Kenyase, reflects his government’s determination to secure Ghana’s resources and ensure peace and stability in the region.
The President in his address at the commissioning ceremony of GNS Achimota at the Sekondi Naval Base said, the government’s achievements, including the acquisition of over 20 modern platforms demonstrate the unwavering commitment to making Ghana a maritime powerhouse in the sub region.
He added that his administration has significantly enhanced the modernization of the Ghana Navy which includes upgrading the naval fleet with modern platforms such as Offshore Security vessels and boundary class ships.
The Minister for Defense, Hon Dominic Nitiwul also remarked on the significance of the new vessel, highlighting its importance in supporting the country's maritime security efforts. He emphasised the government's commitment to retooling and equipping the Ghana Armed Forces to enable them to perform their duties diligently. Hon Nitiwul enumerated the achievements chalked by the government in the security sector during his tenure and expressed his profound gratitude to the president for maintaining him as Minister for Defence throughout his eight-year tenure.
The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu in his welcome address, expressed gratitude to the President and the Japanese Ambassador for facilitating the acquisition of the vessel from Japan.
At a luncheon hosted in his honour, the CNS presented a photobook showcasing the president’s transformational achievements within the Ghana Navy to him.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by Ministers of State, Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Service Chiefs, Nananom, high-ranking government officials and senior officers.
