Students of Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy (LECIAD), University of Ghana, on Monday 3 February 2025, paid an educational visit to the Naval Headquarters at Burma Camp, Accra.
The visit aimed at enhancing the students’ learning experience on International Law and the Law of the Sea, leading to the award of Masters and PhD degrees.
The students were received and welcomed by the Deputy Chief Staff Officer in charge of Operations and Training at the Naval Headquarters, Commodore Steve Nyam who entreated them to tap into the wealth of experience of two of the esteemed Directors of the Navy who were scheduled to make presentations to them.
The Director of Naval Operations, Captain (GN) Ebenezer Kwame Yirenkyi and the Director of Naval Legal Affairs, Captain (GN) Naa Ayeley Akwei-Aryee took turns to deliver lectures to the students.
The presentations centred on the Economic importance of the Gulf of Guinea, Threats to maritime security, Causes of insecurities and the Role of the Ghana Navy in addressing insecurities in the Gulf of Guinea.
Other topics such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), Freedom of the High Seas, Maritime Jurisdictions, Challenges Confronting the Law of the Sea, among others were touched on.
Dr Linda Darkwa, the leader of the delegation, expressed gratitude to the Chief of the Naval Staff and the entire Navy for the opportunity. She was hopeful that the lectures would be institutionalised to broaden students understanding of the topic.
