The Western Naval Command (WNC) has hosted the Tree for Life Reforestation Initiative at the Naval Base, Sekondi on Thursday 5 June, 2025.
The initiative, which was in collaboration with KARPOWER and the Forestry Commission and in commemoration of the World Environment Day was themed “Restoring Degraded Landscape.”
In his welcome remarks, the Flag Officer Commanding WNC, Commodore Samuel Ayelazono, emphasized that, trees were more than just part of their landscape. He noted, the event served as a reminder that real change began with simple actions and that a single seedling could grow into a mighty tree.
Speaking at the event, the Western Regional Minister, Hon Joseph Nelson, said the concept of "Tree for Life Reforestation Initiative" was aimed at promoting environmental conservation sustainability and serves as a reminder to the urgent need to protect Ghana's natural resources while combating deforestation and climate change.
The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, Mr Elikem Kotoko affirmed the Commission's commitment to advancing afforestation, reforestation and restoration initiatives nationwide, stressing that, its success required cross-section collaboration. He stated that, planting of trees not not merely symbolic but was also a declaration of intent signifying resolve to reverse the damage and secure the future of unborn generations.
The Communication Manager of KARPOWER Ghana, Sandra Amarquaye, announced that, a total of 3000 trees were to be planted in the region out of which 100 trees were to be planted at the Naval Base, Sekondi and the remaining 2900 trees were to be planted at the Subri Forest reserve. She expressed KARPOWER's pride in partnering with the WNC for the initiative.
