A four (4)-member delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), led by the Director of Peacekeeping and Regional Security, Dr Cyriaque Agnekethom, paid a courtesy visit to the Naval Headquarters, Burma Camp on Tuesday, 17 February 2026. The visit was undertaken ahead of the 5th Meeting of the ECOWAS Sub-Committee of the Chiefs of Naval Staff Conference.
The conference, scheduled to be held in Accra from 18 to 20 February 2026, will focus on key maritime security issues through presentations and in-depth deliberations. It seeks to enhance regional coordination, promote the sharing of best practices, and strengthen collective responses to maritime threats within the Gulf of Guinea and West African maritime domain.
During the visit, Dr Agnekethom highlighted the Sub-Committee’s notable achievements and ongoing efforts aimed at strengthening regional maritime cooperation. He commended the Ghana Navy for its significant contributions and expressed appreciation for its continued leadership and active participation in joint regional initiatives.
Receiving the delegation on behalf of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, the Chief Staff Officer at Naval Headquarters, Commodore Ben Baba Abdul, underscored the strategic importance of maritime security to Ghana’s economy, trade, and the protection of national maritime resources.
Commodore Abdul reaffirmed the Ghana Navy’s strong commitment to cooperation with ECOWAS and its partners and pledged sustained support for regional maritime security initiatives, information sharing, and collaborative efforts to address piracy, illegal fishing, and other transnational maritime threats across West African waters.
