A delegation from the Gender Affairs Office of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has organised an orientation on the Instructors’ Guide for the Gender Training Manual on Thursday, 29 May 2026, at the School of Maritime Operations (SMOPS) Auditorium, Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC), Nutekpor.
The delegation, led by the Gender Policy Advisor to the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Group Captain Theodora Agornyo, paid a courtesy call on the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) NAVTRAC, Commodore James Adongo Agambire, before the training session, where they discussed the objectives of the orientation. Group Captain Agornyo explained that the Gender Training Instructors’ Guide was developed to mainstream gender perspectives across all GAF units and training institutions, to transform institutional culture, increase awareness of gender-related issues, and promote equal opportunities among personnel.
Welcoming the delegation, Cdre Agambire expressed appreciation for the initiative and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the gender training manual is fully integrated into training programmes across the Command’s schools, to strengthen personnel’s understanding and responsiveness to gender-related matters.
Delivering a lecture on the Ghana Armed Forces Gender Policy, the Army Gender Advisor, Colonel Raheematu Alando, sought to enhance participants’ understanding of gender mainstreaming within the GAF and orient personnel on the effective application of the Gender Training Manual. Her presentation focused on understanding gender and gender mainstreaming, the relevance of gender mainstreaming in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), GAF’s approach to integrating gender perspectives, an overview of the GAF Gender Policy, and implementation challenges and mitigation measures.
Colonel Alando emphasised that integrating gender considerations into military training, operations, and administration is essential for strengthening professionalism, inclusivity, institutional effectiveness, and operational efficiency within the Armed Forces.
As part of the programme, a representative from the Women, Youth, Peace, and Security Institute at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Mrs Salomey Fofie Boateng, outlined the manual's key objectives. She explained that the guide provides a structured framework for instructors across GAF Training Schools to effectively deliver gender-focused training.
Mrs Boateng further noted that the manual offers practical guidance on adapting and customising gender training to suit different audience levels. Additionally, she highlighted that it presents a methodical and standardised approach to delivering gender courses, ensuring consistency, quality, and uniformity across all GAF units and training institutions.
The orientation forms part of ongoing efforts by the Ghana Armed Forces to institutionalise gender-responsive policies, enhance awareness on gender-related issues, and promote equity and inclusivity across all formations and training establishments.
