Personnel of the Western Naval Command (WNC), Naval Logistics Command (NAVLOC), and Headquarters Fleet jointly participated in the National General Cleaning Exercise on Friday, 10 July 2026, in support of the Government's efforts to improve environmental sanitation and mitigate the impact of flooding in affected communities.
The exercise formed part of a nationwide initiative declared by the Government under the auspices of the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee, which designated Friday 10 and Saturday 11 July 2026 as National General Cleaning Days in flood-affected regions. The exercise was held under the theme, "Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the Floods."
The personnel were deployed to various locations within Sekondi and its environs, including Kojokrom, where they engaged in sweeping streets, clearing refuse, desilting choked drains, and removing weeds and debris from public spaces. The exercise aimed at ensuring the free flow of water through drainage systems and reducing the risk of flooding during the rainy season.
Speaking during the exercise, the Western Regional Minister, Hon Joseph Nelson, commended the security services and the Municipal Assembly officials for their participation in the national cleanup campaign. He stressed that environmental cleanliness was a collective responsibility and urged members of the public to desist from indiscriminate disposal of waste, which contributed significantly to flooding and environmental degradation. He further called on citizens to sustain the spirit of communal labour beyond the exercise to ensure cleaner and healthier communities.
Also addressing personnel, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Commodore Samuel Ayelazono, underscored the importance of sanitation in safeguarding lives, property, and the environment. He noted that the participation of WNC, NAVLOC, and Headquarters Fleet demonstrated the Ghana Navy's commitment to national development and its support for government initiatives aimed at promoting public health and environmental sustainability.
He said it also reaffirmed the Ghana Navy's commitment to community service and national development while reinforcing the message that collective action was essential in building a cleaner, safer, and more resilient Ghana
The exercise brought together personnel from the Ghana Navy, other security agencies, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, waste management companies, and community members.
