Ghana Armed Forces has activated its search and rescue operation, dubbed “Operation Boafo”, together with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to assist victims affected by the recent flooding in some parts of the Volta Region due to the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams.
So far, about 1800 victims in Mepe and Aveyime Districts have been rescued, according to reports.In a related development, the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu and Chief Executive Officer, NADMO, Nana Agyeman Prempeh led a team headed by the CNS for an aerial reconnaissance yesterday, 15 October 2023 to the North, Central and Southern parts of Tongu in order to have a first hand information of the situation and also ascertain the level of damage caused.
The team also visited some of the disaster sites to assess the extent of damage and also interacted with some of the victims.
Again, to save the Sogakope bridge, the Ghana Navy deployed its personnel at the bridge to avoid the risk of flooding. The bridge connects Sogakope over the Volta River.The team were deployed to clear the weeds impeding flow of the water beneath the bridge.They are also on hand to ensure lives and properties are safe as long as the spillage continues.
The Volta River Authority , it is recalled, begun its controlled spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams on September 15, this year, due to the constant rise in water level upstream of the Akosombo Dam following persistent rain fall.
